A friend of mine asked if I could help salvage data from their computer. Apparently they tried to install some “Anti-Spyware” and when they rebooted the system, it would allow them to login, but then promptly log them off. DELL tried. I tried. But I think ultimately they had a nice deep embedded virus.
So I decided to remove their HD, put it inside a spare computer I had and make it a secondary HD. After messing with the BIOS & DIP swtiches on their HD, I was able to bootup and see their data. Now I had to decide how to copy their data off… I decided to use a spare External USB HD that had enough capacity to hanldle all their stuff. It took all night to copy (USB 1.0 speed). Here is a picture of the setup I used. It is nice to have the skills to be able to help a friend in need.
