• My Grandmother

Today is a very special day.   This is my grandmother with her 1st grandchild & her last grandchild (as of this post ;) ).  She just loved taking this photo.

    My Grandmother, Me & Lilly

She is absolutely proud of ALL her children and grandchildren.  She has been the best grandmother ever. She has never missed my birthday, ever.

Other than my mother, she was the only one who wrote me ‘real’ letters while I was in college.  And she still writes.

Growing up I would spend the night at her house often and I remember her making me breakfast; eggs over easy, toast, bacon and coffee.  She was the one who gave me my first cup.  She tought me how to dip my toast into my coffee.

I remember eating ice cream with her in her bed watching Johnny Carson in my special ice cream bowl. (I think all her grandchildren had the same bowl).

I remember being with her while she groomed her favorite kittys.  She has always had several cats and a dog or two.  I remember helping her feed them by putting food in their bowls on the window shelves in the florida room.   She tought me how to be loving and caring towards animals by how she loved her animals.  We name our pets after famous jazz musicians because she does. Ella, Basie, Billy, Benny, Domino…[add too many more to list]

I become a Knight of Columbus because of things she has said to me or passed on.  She gave me her father’s 4th degree sword and was very eager to learn ‘all’ the secrets. :>

My grandmother worked most of her life and took care of her husband, her 7 kids and all of her grandchildren (and more) and in a very special way touched all of us.  One of my earliest memories is visiting her at Dr. Beckwith’s office on Brickell Ave. in Miami.

I wish I could need to go to Miami more to see her.

Here she is with ALL her grandchildren (except my Bill & Brian, who I know shared similar memories growing up).

Mary Healy, your Mamar, is a remarkable woman. She has the most spectacular family. She raised 7 children who, as adults, are all such amazing people. My family is so small and so disconnected. When I married you, I was frankly overwhelmed by the size of your family. I was and remain in awe of the loving connections your family has. I think that comes from Mamar. Regardless of circumstance, I know you have always been loved and welcomed and included. I know you have never felt excluded or “ex-communicated” from your family. Not all families are so accepting and forgiving. It is a pleasure and a priviledge to be married to you and to have been so welcomed by your family. Your grandmother remains one of the strongest women I know. She is beautiful and graceful and smart and intelligent and she loved you from the moment you were born.

I made my parents GRANDPARENTS at the age of 37 when Paul was born very prematurely. Mom and Dad morphed into the grandparent role with enthusiasm. Mom bonded with Paul immediately, a bond that remains today. Each grandchild was welcomed with celebration at the Grove House, afghans for every one.I was able to finish college because of the support of my Mom, Dad and Grandmother. I wish Mom could enjoy this time in her life as much as the rest of us do

Sorry it took me to long but I really want to join Paul and my fellow cousins in expressing my feelings about Nanny. Nanny, my special name for her, is an amazing women!! Since my dads mom died a year before I was born, nanny had to be twice the grandmother. And I know that my dads mom appreciates everything Nanny does for me. She has done so much for me. I have so much to thank her for. First of all my hair :) . Also I wouldn’t be the young women I am today without her guidance. We share a love for the violin, her father played the violin and I play the violin as well. Nanny and I also a love of animals.

So many of my childhood memories involve nanny and the grove house. I remember her setting my hair and sitting on her bed with her big hairdryer cap on my little head. Nanny and I would lay in her bed with a big cup of ice cream and watch Jay Leno. I also remember when uncle tom found a cat at Vans. He brought the cat inside, it was so tiny and filthy, we washed it in the kitchen sink. I wanted to name it Peaches, but it was a boy so they called it Van. For years, she called him peaches when I was around. We also share many memories from our trip to Germany, England, and on our many trips to New York.

I am extremely fortunate that nanny often spends the night at my house. I have so many memories of us laying in bed and her tell me stories. In the mornings she would always make everyone eggs.

She raised 7 children and worked. When I grow up, I hope to be half the women she is!!! But I promise her I wont have 7 children ;)

She is not only my grandmother, she is my teacher and my friend. I love her more then words could ever express.

I was printing this out for Mamaw again and realized I never left a comment. These memories are so true and vivid for all of us. It is hard to pick one… I will always remember sneaking into a second movie on a single ticket with Mamaw and Papa. I could not have been more than 10 or 11 and we left the movie we planned to see when it was over and noticed a crowd walking into the theater next door. We whispered the idea of following the crowd and then just did it. We laughed for a long time about our mischeviousness later at Arthur Treachers!
